Hunger Strike at Maplehurst CC

Prisoners at Maplehurst are on a hunger strike that started on February 15. Take action to support now! Join the phone and email zap every day until the jail meets their demands.

Prisoners at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex are hunger striking to protest the institution’s failure to meet their basic needs and abide by public health measures which has resulted in the current COVID-19 outbreak at the jail that was declared on January 19th, 2021, and the institution’s inadequate response.

Other active outbreaks have also been confirmed at Toronto South Detention Centre, Toronto East Detention Centre, Vanier Centre for Women, Thunder Bay District Jail and Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre, Central East Correctional Center, and Ottawa-Carleton Detention Center.

COVID Outbreaks in Prisons

There are COVID-19 outbreaks at the Toronto South Detention Centre and most jails and prisons across the province. On December 16, the Ministry of the Solicitor General reported 54 new active cases at TSDC, and a day later, 80 active cases at Joyceville Institution. Reports from prisoners and frontline workers suggest that the outbreak may be much worse. In many cases, prisoners are being denied PPE and cleaning supplies, showers, phone calls, legal visits, and parole, and are on lockdown for upwards of 23 hours per day most days of the week. Take action to demand transparency, accountability, safety, and releases to protect prisoners and our community now!

#500possibilities

Last month, the Ontario Government announced that it will spend an additional $500 million over the next five years to hire more staff and build new infrastructure. This new investment into prisons and jails comes as our communities, municipalities and public services struggle to recover from COVID-19 and while communities are calling for the abolition of prisons and police.

How would you use this money differently? What would your community look like with this kind of support? Use the #500possibilities to add your voice to the choir calling on the province to do better. Want us to share your suggestion on our social media? Use this form and we'll make sure to shout you out if you'd like: https://forms.gle/G48PyKFMPuMYGgzb7
